Peru

Where we have been

In November 2007, a team of 9 people from LifePoint Church visited the Andes mountains of Peru.  While in Peru, this group visited several locations; Lima, Santiago, Santa Rosa.

What we have done

LifePoint sent a ministry team on their first visit to Tapacocha Peru in November 2008. While on this trip God blessed us greatly by creating relationships between the schools, the village government system and the village hospital. In only a few days in the village our team, taught English, evangelized to more than 1/3 of the village (resulting in more than 120 decisions to follow Christ), played soccer, and the list goes on...
  What Now?

While there will always be an evangelism focus on LifePoint Mission trips, we now need to follow up with discipleship.

Here are some things we are praying about:
1. There are huge cultural barriers to these trips and even to their understanding of the Gospel. Pray for the 125 new believers that they will sustain their faith in the absence of faith leaders or Scripture.
2. Pray that God raises up leaders for this village and that these people will be willing to work with LifePoint to spread God’s love to this village.
3. Pray for future trips to this village, that we will have the same access (if not more) to the schools and government of the town.
4. Pray for resources such as bibles, and discipleship materials that will help us bridge the language and cultural barriers.
5. Pray that God would begin to stir the hearts of LifePoint members to go back to Tapacocha and potentially provide summer or full time missionaries to this area.
6. Pray that the sub-mayor that we met will continue to hold office during his upcoming election or that the next office holder will be as accepting and excited about LifePoint’s involvement in their village.
  What next?

LifePoint is planning to make as many trips as it takes to teach the people of Tapacocha to sustain their own faith as well as evangelize to others.

Our next scheduled trip dates:

1. August 7-14, 2010
2. November 6-13, 2010

When I was in Peru I learned that God can work in your heart without a “moving, spiritual” experience and that it’s not about being serious all the time, but that God enjoys it when you’re having fun! Our team hiked to the top of a mountain - like Moses. I can’t say that on the “mountaintop” God struck me with lightning and told me what He wanted to do with my life, but I can say that God used the mountain to show me things more clearly and that brought me closer to Him. “I look up to the mountains - does my help come from there? My help comes from the Lord, who made the heavens and the earth!” Psalm 121:1,2

God had a reason for giving each of us strength to make the long hike. In the village I was able to tell some of the children about Jesus and how He loves all of us and died for us. God knew the hearts of the villagers - young and old - and He sent us to share His love with those who need to know Him as their Savior and to encourage the believers. This trip made me realize that the most important thing I can do is to trust God and follow His will for my life! And that’s why I must remember Acts 20:24 when I want my own way, just in order to be comfortable. “My life is worth nothing unless I use it for doing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus - the work of telling others the Good News about God’s wonderful kindness and love.”

Peru was truly a humbling experience for Julie and I.  God has taught us many things on this trip like how to appreciate the simple things, not matter how difficult things get He has a plan for us going on mission trip.

Wow! What and awesome trip. My expectation before I left for Peru was to meet God on the mountain trail and of course He was there. About ¾ of the way up the mountain I was exhausted out of breathe not able to lift my feet knowing I could not go on any further. I looked up to the heavens and ask Jesus to carry me. I believe Jesus gave me the strength to keep going and to make it to the village. Seeing God’s creation and the beauty in the Andes Mountains seeing the passion the Peruvian people have for the Lord humbled me greatly. I was greatly honored in providing my gifts and experience which has been given to me.

What God taught me on my trip to Peru...
•    He really is working all over the world, even in the mountains of Peru.
•    People are hungry for the word all over the world.
•    We can accomplish things we never imagined we could, physically, with God’s strength.
•    God really has a plan, when it seems we have no plan.
•    When we thought we had no energy left, god gave us strength.
•    It’s impossible to go on a mission’s trip and not come back a changed person.
•    We spend way too much time worrying about the small things in life and not enough time helping others.
